I love everything about the W8 passat 6MT wagon...except that its a B5 passat AND a W8.

Ahh, Craigslist. "No test drives without deposits" for an 11-year-old used Volkswagen.

the W8 may be the only B5 engine option more expensive to maintain than the 2.7tt.

Wow. I get no test drives without cash in hand so that you don't get some punk sliding it into a wall without any intention of buying it, but a non-refundable deposit? I get the feeling that no one bought that car.

The seller is trumping it up big time. I don't care if its pretty rare, its not going up in value.

Ya'll wimps. I want it bad, and if it wasn't on the other side of the country and I had the money to buy another W8, I would already be test driving.

Not even, he had a "predetermined" route you had to take, which was basically a half mile drive through his neighborhood, never really leaving first gear. The guy was a joke, we drove away and spent a little bit more on a MUCH nicer E30.

I find it funny that it's in Carlsbad, CA, but has MN plates. I actually feel like I might have seen that for sale here in MN a while ago.

It'd be a sweet vehicle here in the frozen tundra, if you had an impressive maintenance & repair fund for it.

Not bad at all. Oil changes are expensive, and the PCV gets screwed up in the winter like the rest of the B5 platform, but the engine itself isn't really an issue.

As it still has Minnesota plates on it, I'm willing to bet A) It has tons of rust underneath due to the awful road salt we use up in the north, and B) He's struggling to make his new mortgage payment in California and will gladly take $9k for it, even though he knows it will appreciate in value (debatable as well)

The Cheapest V8 S4 Avant on Autotrader is $16,490. Its a 2006 and has 113,xxx miles. They are getting closer in price, but still separated by at least $6000. Most are in the $20,000 range. So your question is getting more relevant as depreciation makes these cars closer in value.

Okay, I'm actually considering one of these, but an automatic—I'm off manuals for a while after my E39 540i/6 was totaled in a not-my-fault accident. It's literally the only 4-Motion wagon available in eastern Nebraska right now. I'm familiar with complex German V8's (Porsche 928 and aforementioned BMW) and Volkswagens (12v Jetta).

Am I insane?

Kinja'd!!! Will with a W8 races an E30 > MannyBones
10/15/2014 at 17:15

Kinja'd!!!0

Not totally. Automatic wagons are cheap right now - $4-5k range. The transmissions seem to be more of an issue than the engines, but they won't strand you, just misbehave. Of course they have all the same problems as the rest of the B5 platform like passenger seat heater issues, rear wiper issues, disobedient electronics, etc. I would consider a 928 to be much more difficult to keep on the road. I have had my W8 for about 1.5 years, and have put about 10k miles on it as a daily driver. The car is very comfortable for long highway cruises, decent in the twisty bits, and an incredible all-wheel drift machine in the snow.

As a bonus, the wagons are some of the most inconspicuous cars on the road, which comes with obvious benefits.

Kinja'd!!! Alex > Saracen
10/15/2014 at 17:24

I'm not a VW guy, so I don't know much about the engine, but that's great looking car.

Kinja'd!!! MannyBones > Will with a W8 races an E30
10/15/2014 at 17:30

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, I've had my 928 for about 15 years now. Difficult to keep on the road? Not too bad, as long as you learn to keep that mile of 80's (70's designed) electrical wiring in good shape. /j

But yes, I'm definitely intrigued by the sleeper-wagon concept. And my wife likes the idea better than the sedan.

Kinja'd!!! Will with a W8 races an E30 > MannyBones
10/15/2014 at 17:39

Kinja'd!!!0

Then get one! And definitely the wagon - you can't fit a stack of Ikea flat packs, 10 ft boards, multiple engine blocks, or an E30 subframe in the sedan. And if you fold the seats down in the wagon, it will comfortably sleep 2 people in felt-walled luxury.

Kinja'd!!! RallyWrench > Saracen
10/15/2014 at 18:46

Kinja'd!!!0

So, the car is in sunny Carlsbad, but appears to have Minnesota plates. If it saw winter use back there, the low mileage is irrelevant.

These are sort of cool in a WTF were they thinking, but thanks for the manual kind of way. They're not very fast, but I've only driven automatics so maybe the stick helps there. Imagine it like a V8 Allroad with less power, but no air suspension or timing belt.

Kinja'd!!!1

He has a legitimate rare car, I wouldn't let a bunch of jackasses off craigslist tool around with it either. Those W8s were unique, and if your into wagons, it's a pretty nice car. I wouldn't buy it, but if I owned it I would be choosey over who drove it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a W8 is more unreliable than Audi's 4.2L V8 which is pretty bulletproof.

This is the one I've seen. There's a V6 4-motion sedan at the same place (it's one of those indie shops/dealer) that's cleaner, but has more miles. Is 121k worryingly high for these?

It's kind of hard for me to meet people on Craigslist to buy things nowadays. Whenever we meet up and someone is acting weird I've had to tell them if they sell me something stolen or they know somethings wrong with it they're going to catch a beating. Nowadays that shits too stressful for me, but I used to have to tell people that all the time.
